I’m really excited to start a new mini-series on the blog called: Kate Makes Kombucha! If you follow me on IG or have been reading my recent posts you’ll know I have a love obession with Kombucha, an incredibly natural and organic fermented probiotic beverage that’s naturally fizzy. It’s a great alternative for those hooked up sugary pops and sodas as it’s loaded with goodness and great for your bod!
Before we get started I wanted to share a bit more about Kombucha, it’s benefits and why you might want to start adding this amazing live beverage to your diet. So, what is Kombucha? It is a naturally effervesent fermented beverage full of live bacteria and probiotics. Now, before you say ‘ew’ and go running off.. it’s all good bacteria. The stuff your gutt and digestive system need to keep you feeling great! Kombucha is usually made with sweetened teas and is produced by fermenting the tea using a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, or “SCOBY“. The scoby-doo (my made-up nickname) gets to work on the fermented tea by eating up all the sugars (fructose and glucose) and converting the glucose and fructose into nutrients like B-vitamins, antioxidants, and glucaric acids.
What are the health benefits? Kombucha is amazing and offers such a great list of benefits. It’s a great natural probiotic that will help kick your digestive system into high gear. When your digestive system is working optimally it will boost your mood and lessen the sysptoms of anxiety and depression, it can also help with yeast overgrowth (candida) and gives your body the nutrients needed to heal itself. Kombucha is also a great detoxifier, cleaning out all the yucky toxic stuff we have in our liver, stomach and digestive tract.
Ok, now onto the fun part! Kate Makes Kombucha is going to be a series from the beginning of growing my own scoby to my first bottle of completely fermented and flavoured kombucha. I’m so excited to share this journey with you! So let’s get started.
I mentioned in a recent post that I met Vanessa and Michael from Vams Kombucha, a Toronto based kombucha brewer that I absolutely love. Vanessa has been teaching me some great tips and tricks to getting your very first scoby going. I also bought a called: Brooklyn Kombucha which teaches you how to brew your own kombucha, what equipment to use, the environment needed, and so much more. It’s a fantastic book! Together, with my Brooklyn Kombucha book, Vanessa and my first bottle of Vams original kombucha I began growing my scoby-doo!
In this post I’m going to share with you the things I needed to get started. If you’d like to try making your own Kombucha, come along for time ride and we can grow our scoby’s together, share experiences and have loads of fun!
Items Needed to Start Your Home Brew:
- 1 Bottle of Original (not flavoured) Kombucha – make sure it is not pasturized, as some brands do this, killing off all beneficial bacteria making the beverage life-less.
- Peice of cloth – this can be a cut from an old shirt, cheese cloth, really anything breathable but closely stitched so as to not let any fruit flys in!
- Elastic Band/Rope – you will need something to secure the cloth to the opening of the kombucha bottle
- Warm & Dry area for your scoby to start growing – I placed mine inside a cupboard in the kitchen
Thats all! Let your new homebrew start ‘brewing’ and in a few short days you’ll see a scoby beginning to form! Stay tuned for the next part in this series: Kate Makes Kombucha: Scoby Meets Nute. and here’s a sneak peak at my growing scoby!
